How can I  battery power pi+piface+magician chassis?

I have just bought a piface board and magician chassis with the aim of making a pi powered robot. However I would appreciate some help on how to run it from batteries.

 

The magician chassis has a battery holder for 4 AA batteries and the 2 motors that come with it are rated as 4.5V.

 

How would I best connect the batteries to the pi - I guess some sort of regulator would be required? Do I have to use the mini usb socket or can I connect the 5V directly to the GPIO pins.

 

Would it be best to use the piface relays to switch the motors on and off and if so how should they be wired up from the batteries?

 

can the motors be put into reverse?

 

Any help would be appreciated so I can get this project off and running.

    Hi all,

     

    You can use the following link to provide power to your RPi, connect the positive to a 5V pin on the RPi and the Negative to the GND pin and you should get the RPi working.

    Alternatively you could also use a 9V battery with a 7805 but this is not efficient as it is gonna produce quiet a bit of heat and you will be needing heat sink to cool it.

    I have been reading http://www.daveakerman.com/?page_id=1294 so i believe with 4 AA's and a MCP1825S-3302E/AB i can connect this directly to the 3.3v line on the Raspberry Pi.  If i do this will all bar the relays on the PiFace work sufficiently?

    Honestly i have not used the Piface but looking at the relays which are 5V you ought not be able to run em by only supplying 3.3V.
