Error during start-up of Wireless Networking

I have added an EDIMAX EW-7811Un wireless adaptor to my RPi. I understand by reading

the forums that this unit is considered plug-and-play.

 

During start-up the following messages appear on the screen :

 

[ ok ] Setting kernel variables  ... done.

[....] Configuring network interfaces...ioctl [SIOCSIWAP]: Operation not permitted

ioctl[SIOCSIWENCODEEXT]: Invalid argument

ioctl[SIOCSIWENCODEEXT]: Invalid argument

done.

 

I am using raspbian 2012-10-28 updated.

 

Any advice would be most welcome (it's above my pay-grade !).

    You will definitely need to update all your Software/Firmware/Drivers using the # sudo apt-get update command

     

    You might need to run # sudo apt-cache update first, then perhaps #sudo apt-cache search FILE for anything relating to the Chipset embedded in your Wireless Dongle or perhaps forEDIMAX. These searches will find anything available via cache for your specific Dongle. Then run the apt-get for it as above

     

    Reboot with the dongle still connected and it might work fine then.

     

    After that, you might need to amend a startup File embedded in the \network\interfaces\ Directory in order to setup something like WLAN0 to be able to communicate with any external Wireless Device you want to connect to with the Dongle.... there's loads of advice & guidance readily available on here and elsewhere for that aspect of things

    I will bite the bullet and download the latest version (plus updates). 

     

    I was hoping to use the Wireless Config utility  on the RPi Desktop to set up my Wifi access, but that's for later....

     

    Despite the start-up error messages, the utility saw my router OK, but failed to install it ......

  • I have received that error message on every version of Debian I have used, multiple dongles from different manufacturers, and both model B board revisions, but my wifi has always worked perfectly so I gave up trying to find out what was causing the error message.

    Yes, I confirm that the error messages have disappeared with Wheezy  2013-02-09, many thanks Andy.
