How to control my 12V Fan with my raspberry?

Former Member
Former Member over 12 years ago

Hi, I'm fairly new to the "electronic" world, and I recently bought a Raspberry Pi, I made a perspex case for it, and I still had a 12V fan laying around.

So my question is now, how can I manually control the fan speed with my raspberry? and since it's 12V, be safe from frying my raspberry.

If anyone would be able to help me with this, I'd be very grateful!

Sorry, but I still don't get how I'd be able to control the fan since it is only showing how to protect my GPIO.

I also don't get a lot of terms, since English isn't my native language. image

Is there a possibility you can show me a circuit so I can comprehend what I actually need to do?

Here's a discussion about "Wiring a motor to the RasPi", starting with a comment I made about simple on/off control: http://www.element14.com/community/thread/19506?start=6

For speed control, most people use Pulse Width Modulation.  I think there are some comments about that further down in the discussion.  I don't have any personal experience with PWM.
