After School club projects

GreenYamo

Hello, Hopefully within the next couple of weeks I'll be helping out in a local school's Pi club.

The format is pretty much free form, about an hour or so after school.

I'd love some ideas from this group as to what would be a good project for an hour or so - it can be anything, a Python Project, some GPIO interfacing, Scratch.

The Teaching and Learning Resources topic on the foundation's forum only has just over 300 posts, I was hoping for a bit more than that !

Thank you.

Steve

The class I will be "leading" is a summer camp; 5 days, 3 hours per day, 7th graders, maximum of 8 kids.

At this point my plan is have a one hour introduction to the various OS available for computers, relating that to gasoline, diesel, and electic cars. Then a short explanation about the difference between command line statements and GUI icons and why command lines are good. Follow this with an introduction to text editors so that they will understand how to "fix" the keyboard issue (GB versus US) on the Pi by editing a configuration file.

Follow this with the rest of the day trying to do something in Scratch, probably from the Educational Manual.

Day 2 will start with a very, very basic look at programming using Python.  After an hour or so they will be given a choice to work on a project with Scratch (I'll give them a couple of ideas) or start work on an Arduino robot with Python.

Before the camp is over I want to make sure they know how to update their Pi and add new programs, so the difference between a basic user and 'root' will be discussed.

That's as far as I've gotten so far...have until August to get everything worked out. image

This is actually beta testing for an after-school program in the fall that will meet twice a week for 3 months.
