i juz get my raspberry pi and a 4GB raspbeey Pi SD card with debian OS.However where should i start,since i am new here .thx

I can advise you to install a lite version of any linux-kernel OS, take some sensors (like a simple ZWave) and try to build your own security system for the room. A bit python or any other language, or you can use an existing solution, like a kaa project framework ( https://www.kaaproject.org/healthcare/) . So you will learn how to connect simple devices and how to interact with them through your raspberry platform.
