i wrote the Python code,, ,,, nothing happens,, just errors,,

Be happy, errors are good.  They are trying to tell you what's wrong.

If you tell us what the errors are, there are some smart folks here that might

have a chance of interpreting them for you.   If you can show us the Python

code you wrote, that would help too, as would knowing what OS you're using.

If you're following a tutorial, which one?  If you bought some sort of kit, which one?

Since you've programmed for 20 years, you know that even the slightest error can

cause things to go terribly wrong.  So you may be closer than you think to having

    it work.

You say it's supposed to be for kids.  But this version is mostly for hobbyists.

The educational version for kids hasn't been released yet. So don't be surprised

if you have to do some troubleshooting.

There's some good lore on the GPIOs and example programs at the RasPi Hardware Wiki.

You need to run most GPIO programs as root: instead of entering "my-executable" at the command line, you must enter "sudo my-executable" and enter your password.
