Reminds me of the Altair 8800 program that played monophonic music over an untuned AM radio. It played "Daisy Bell: the Bicycle Song".
This was before home computers had FCC regulations.
These are fun RF projects for converging amateur radio clubs + hackerspaces.
(Good RF instrumentation required.)
I wonder if the BBB's two PRUs could be harnessed for the job. They could be run in time sync to generate I+Q quadrature outputs to feed into an RF mixer, or the reverse on receive --- a good use for the PRU's extremely tight realtime behaviour, at least in principle.
Computers and radios tend to be mutually hostile neighbours, so it's good to see radio amateurs making them cooperate nicely under the SDR banner. My eye is on Parallella for this.
