New to the PI

Former Member
Former Member over 11 years ago

Hello, I just ordered my Pi yesterday and seeing all of these discussions I wanted to take the opportunity to ask what I should do since I really want to use the Pi for learning programming for Video Games or certain applications(building my own OS or level editor), I want the Pi to be my start up in learning this I have always been wanting to pursue something in programming and I believe this is the chance. I know my way around Python somewhat, and seeing as I am still young(I'm 17) I would like to learn things now and have things stick rather than have this complete struggle in learning something new later on. Thanks for reading and the help.

Many people recommend The Magpi as a good way to get started and as a source for ideas.

I know what I would like to do, I just don't know how to go about it. I would like to learn any programming for making visuals and I understand C/C++ allows for that but I don't know where to start

    Juan,

What is it you would like to do?

LOL - it's not quite as bad as that, you've got a good few decades yet before you're in trouble!!

I would like to work on graphics, coding for video games yet I'm not very familiar with programming as much as I want to be. I know Python somewhat and that's pretty much it then again I want this to be a learning experience

I don't have any personal experience with Python, but since RasPi was originally intended for Python programming (the "pi" in RasPi) and you're already familiar with Python, I'd suggest starting with it.  There's a Python library called PyGame for writing video games, and I believe it runs on RasPi.  There's also a lot of activity in the Python and Graphical Programming sections of the RasPi Forum: scroll down and look at the Programming section.

I do lots of 2-D graphics programming at the C level, but none if it for games unless you consider "cartoon simulation" of logic diagrams to be a graphical game.  C-level graphics programming is a pretty steep learning curve, so I'd check out Python first.

I totally agree with Mr. Beetem, since you are familiar with Python you should use it. This will only make you stronger with the language. Most computer languages have simularities and for me it was easier to learn one very well at first than 2 or 3 different ones half way. When I started, Pascal was what I learned, then C, there was no C++ at the time (I think I just realized how old I'm getting). But being strong in Pascal helped me pick up C language with ease. The up side is that the two were very close to each other. I really encourage you to learn as much as you can, it really pays off in the end!!

On a side note, there are great programs for game creating out there. I am teaching my son with Unity3D, this is free to download and use. It's worth checking out.

Good luck with all you do,

    Dale W
