raspberry pi gaming

hi to all, i love retro gaming, from atari to snes, i was watching the ben heck show and the raspberry pi on youtube, since then i have been doing some research into it, i have just one question do you have to load all of the roms onto a really big sd card or is there some way of using a external hard drive, any help would be great.

ps, my pi comes tomorrow

Yes, you can use an external hard drive or even a hard drive attached to a different computer. As long as it's an empty hard drive to begin with, I would format it as an ext4 drive and then check out instructions on how to use the "mount" command or "fstab". Mount will temporarily mount a drive until you reboot the pi, and fstab will automatically mount a drive when you boot the pi.

If you're in the GUI environment, it should automatically mount the drive as soon as you plug it in, but I've found that the emulators run slower in the gui so it's better to use something like retropie

The best person to ask about retropie in the "official forums" is probably Abishur.
He knows a lot about it, as shown here:

The rpi.org blog mentions a baby boy, so he might be a bit sleep deprived right now.
