Hi there would love to know were to start

Hello all I am new to site but am eager to learn, I have done a bit of research and beleave this is the way I would like to go.  What I would like to do is make a media server from computer room to TV room, General set up is ethernet cat5e to TV room I could go wireless can get gigabit router it nessary I have compaired a few but down to:

Popcorn Hour A-400 http://www.cloudmedia.com/products/popcornhour/store-a-400

 

WD TV Live http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=330

 

and finlly

 

BUNDLE, MODEL B + 8GB SDCard W/ NOOBS PRE-INSTALLED with Raspberry Pi Media Center 

 

Am I on the right track or am I missing something ? Would love imput, feedback etc.  Not sure if need the bundle I am great with windows PC's and know how to find software if I just got the new Raspberry pi with sd card, hdmi cable, and downloaded XBMC that would work ? 

 

I downloaded XBMC on my Note 2 and worked well

    Richard, you went for the cheapest solution first, which is always a good idea !

     

    I have a Model A Pi and run RaspBMC on that which works very well. You talk about a media Server - all the things you mention are really clients. They will put media from a server or the Internet, but none of the above will serve it up, although in theory a Pi could serve media, but slowly.

     

    Do you have something to stream from, such as a NAS server ?

    Hi steve yes I have my main computer in other room all networked and 3 tb of mkv's, I got the PI today pluged into tv keybord mouse card and ethernet. It all loaded up I know it connect to internet saw it download updates but all I see is command prompt image login using pi      pw  raspberry  now loged in still command prompt image  I know there a gui but not sure how to find it image

    Hi Richard, at the prompt, just type startx to get to the desktop.
