Raspberry Pi XBMC

Former Member
Former Member over 11 years ago

I purchased your Raspberry PI XBMC product and have been wrestling to get it to connect to my network and the internet.   I have tried all kinds of things --- seems you need to be connected to the internet to get things to fix the ethernet connection and connection to internet --- should be on the SD card you provide.  But I spend endless hours trying to get it up on the internet.  - wired or wireless nothing works  -- all my other systems hook to internet no problem  --- a working ethernet pluged into the XBMC system fails

Can't go on  --- don't know what to do?????

While I did not purchase a RaspberryPi XBMC, I downloaded the RaspBMC image onto a SD card and popped it into my Pi-Model B and it worked. It was a little difficult to configure the wireless but I think the ethernet just connected.

I know it sounds silly, but do you have a DHCP server active on the network? The XBMC doesn't have a static default IP address. You need DHCP to configure an address or you have to configure one manually through the menu. It was a bit hard to find some of the configuration settings as I was unfamiliar with the XBMC desktop. I had significantly more difficulty getting the wireless configured. My board intermittently detects the USB wireless adapter through the hub in my monitor. Check your DHCP servers error log or connected devices log to see if your XBMC devices MAC address is there.

Check your cable on both ends for loose connectors and make sure that you have a good link. Swap the cable with a known good one.  Move the cable to a known working port on the switch. Have you verified that the switch port and cable work with other devices? It sounds like maybe you have.

Does your switch give you any indication of something connected on that port. The RaspberryPi XBMC is 10/100. Make sure your switch supports 10/100. Some Gigabit (1000) switches do not support 10/100, but most do. If the switch is managed make sure the ports are set for auto and not full or half duplex.  Most all the devices these days have Auto MDIX for ethernet and auto-negotiation and will auto-negotiate  for the fastest link speed that both devices support. Sometimes there is just incompatibility between the devices and they never link properly, especially with older switches/hubs. By older, I mean devices that are say older than 2008.

If you have a spare 4G SD card, you might try downloading the RaspBMC from the website and loading it on your spare SD card. Make sure you backup any data on the spare SD card before you re-image it. Follow the directions on the website for how to format and load an image on an SD card. Or you could try a Raspian Wheezy image where you can more easily get at the ifconfig command to verify that there is not a hardware problem with your board. Granted this is more complicated, but it can help verify that your image is not bad or you have a hardware problem.

Do you have another Raspberry Pi to try connecting to the same port?  This swaps out the hardware and doesn't require flashing an image.

Do you know if the XBMC ever gets assigned an IP address within the range of your network? I think one of the pages will show network configuration.  Try only using the ethernet and leave the wifi adapter unconnected. Sometimes having 2 network connections can cause connectivity issues. Try working with wired or wireless, but not both at the same time.

    Hello Cozmicray,

This would be a better question in the Raspberry Pi discussions area of the Community. I will move it there now for you.

Thank you for using the element14 Community and hope you are enjoying it!
