Sending live video feed from the RPi

Hi, am am quite new to the raspberry pi, and I have decided to try my fist proper project with it.

I want to be able to connect a webcam to the raspberry pi, and be able to view the feed on a different computer (on the same network)

I have a raspberry pi (model B) a webcam, and a wifi dongle.

I saw a similar thing to this being done on the Ben  Heck show, when he was making his dog treat dispenser.

So what I basically want to know is how I should go around doing this, and where to start with it.

Thanks in advanced.

I actually did something like this last night...

    I'm using raspbian

    apt-get install motion

    sudo apt-get install libjpeg62

Then I downloaded the binary motion-mmal, and extracted.

    mv motion /usr/bin

    mv motion-mmal.conf /etc/motion/motion.conf

    ln -s /etc/motion/motion.conf /etc/motion.conf

modify /etc/motion/motion.conf as needed (change the path it writes to from /home/pi to something else, it runs as user motion so that user needs to write to this location).

edit /etc/default/motion to enable to startup on boot

    reboot or run /etc/init.d/motion start

Then, use your web browser to connect to the RPI IP on port 8081

    Also see

Or many other topics about this.

    Hope that helps

    Regards,

    Adam

I have a pretty in depth walk through of how to set up the web camera with motion on my blog.  www.bradleycrittenden.com.

I have gone away from this method and am now consuming the stream of a wireless camera with apache and displaying it on a website.
