No audio on HDMI

Former Member

I have a Raspberry Pi B connected to a TV through one of the HDMI ports using an HDMI cable. The TV is new and the HDMI cable came with the RPi kit. The video is great and all the software works fine. The only problem I have is no audio over the HDMI. One indicator that my be relevant is that as soon as the RPi starts up the TV display switches from “HDMI2” (for HDMI  port 2) to “DVI2”. I think it is seeing a DVI input instead of HDMI. I tried an HDMI port on a computer to the TV and it stayed “HDMI2”. I tried the DevKitsFast.mp4 from  the Element14 training videos and it worked fine when started from the command line as: omxplayer –o hdmi DevKitsFast.mp4, except again no audio. The same file worked great when I entered: omxplayer –o local DevKitsFast.mp4, and plugged some headphones into the RPi. I got video on the TV and audio out the RPi. I also noticed I have no reference to any audio or sound control accessories on my desktop (or anywhere else for that matter). I boot with a NOOBs card that came with the kit. Do I need to download other software for sound control? I did do an update shortly after I got the kit but no help.

Any help would be appreciated.

The only thing that I can think of is that the 'pi brings up the video and the audio part of the HDMI signal in two stages. If by the time the 'pi brings up the audio the TV has decided to stop listening.....

Anyway, that would mean that if you manually change over to TV (anything not HDMI2)  and back to HDMI2, it would work. Does it?

    Roger

Thanks for the information and getting back to me so soon. As soon as I get a chance (probably a few days) this is inkthe first thing I will try.

    Thanks again.

Got this problem fixed but not solved.

I fixed this problem by going through the Raspberry Pi Form and finding a post from Sept. 14, 2012 by rew. The post is http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?p=173430. Thanks rew! I like to give credit where it is due.

After reading this post I started looking into the RPi config file and found a post that mentioned the eLinux.org site. I went to the “R-Pi Configuration File” page at eLinux and found the information on un-commenting the hdmi_drive=2. I changed this line in the config file through the Raspberry Pi and it worked great. I now get sound through omxplayer. I still don’t get sound with Scratch or any of the Python games, but I’m new and I’ll figure it out.

One thing I would like to know is why the Pi and HDMI picked this mode. The TV is a new Sanyo DP24E14 (our first flat screen believe it or not). When the Pi booted it did come up with a weird mode: hdmi_mode=39 of hdmi_group=2 (DMT) and switched from HDMI to DVI. The TV does not even have this mode. The TV does have a MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link) which can be connected through the HDMI connector. Don’t know if this would have anything to do with it?

Thanks all for the help. I’ll keep researching and reading the forms.

Im not sure if this would've helped but the amixer command in conjunction with the cset argument tends to work when i have audio issues

here is an example that is setting the analogue audio out to be active

    sudo amixer cset numid=3 1

Thanks for the help Ethan. I’ll see if this will help with my lack of audio with Scratch and the Python Games. My biggest problem now is a lack of time and my lack of Linux experience. Years ago I had to use Unix on a limited basis to test networks connected to Dec computers. I was encouraged to learn more Unix, but I didn’t. That was a big mistake. But now at least I can enjoy learning Linux. It seems to be more fun when it’s just a hobby.
