Raspberry Pi Firewall Block

I teach at a private school, and I managed to get an alumni to donate $1,000 to purchase Raspberry Pi units for my CS III Honors class. Now, the Fortinet firewall is blocking virtually every download for the Pi (GPIO, etc.). Does anyone know of a spec sheet that I can send to our Technology department listing all the sites required to install the software we need? Is everything on the Pi Store? Fortinet categorizes the Pi store as freeware games.

 

Any input you could give would help.

  • my son has just finished first year UNI using a PI and all of his required code came from GITHUB, either the schools one or the public one. Never from the Store.

     

    that and performing commands like SUDO INSTALL GINI for instance, sorry caps wrong but want to highlight the command

     

    not sure where INSTALL goes to get its stuff but once you figure that out you should have a good place to start,

     

    I agree with the techies, the public store is mostly games and stuff, not educational material (Only a quick look so please don't flame me)

  • I've never yet visited the Pi Store. Raspbian is an off-shoot of Debian, so essential packages can be installed using apt-get. This includes programming languages, drivers, mysql, development environments and so on.

    LOL, yes that is what I meant, sorry, install being only part of the command with apt-get, so where ever apt-get goes to retrieve the files is what I am referring to

  • What's needed depends on what operating system is being used. The stuff on the PiStore is just applications (that would normally run on Raspbian (or NOOBS/Raspbian)). I've only ever looked at one app on there and decided not to bother installing it.

     

    The general software base for Raspbian is on mirrordirector.raspbian.org but as the name implies that's not just one machine out on the public internet it's a collection of mirroring machines that each provide the packages (hopefully to the nearest clients, my mirrordirector for the UK is different to your mirrordirector for the USA (and that could be different between the East Coast and West Coast users)).

     

    The best thing to ask for would be access to an authorised proxy that would allow you to access any public internet site but would require authentication and logging so the school can control where you go and the materials you're accessing.
