stepper motor to raspberry pi

I am wiring a raspberry pi to a polulu (12V stepper motor, as per the diagram in this page, http://www.pololu.com/picture/view/0J4124

 

I just wanted to know how I could test using python code. Would something like this below work ??

Should I put in a for loop ?? Or should I input a particular sequence for it to work?

I am basically making it start when a switch is pressed, and close when another switch is closed.

    Yes, if that code works for general GPIO like driving an LED then it will also work for the motor drive board

     

    you may not be able to control the timing as well as you would want but it should definitely allow you to make the motor move in either direction

     

    adding a loop will allow better visualization of the motor functioning as depending on the motor model, you may not see much movement with just a couple of steps, the loop could include a time element so it could run in a direction for a configurable period of time.

     

    you can experiment with different timing parameters to optimize the performance or even make it play a tune (I have seen demo's on YouTube where people are having a set of steppers play a melody, really cool and fun)
