RPi HDMI - AJA HA5 - HSDSI...  NG.  WTF?

OK, so I am trying to get images that I MAKE, meaning I OWN THEM, out of the RPi HDMI port, into a Video Switcher that has an HDSDI input only.  And I have just spent about 18 hours trying to get an HDMI signal out of the RPi that the AJA will take.  I am using an HDMI Splitter, which strips (amazingly) HDCP and the splitter is before the AJA to remove HDCP (which the AJA will not pass through) so I'm sure that is not the problem.

I've been all over the /boot/config.txt file trying all of the HDMI modes that I can find which are documented to be accepted by the AJA HA5 listed at this link https://www.aja.com/en/products/mini-converters/ha5#techspecs  and I must have rebooted the RPi a hundred times trying different settings.  But I have NOT ONCE gotten a signal out of the RPi that the AJA will recognize as an acceptable signal.  I have 2 AJAs, 2 power supplies, good cables and I have tested the HDMI through the cables and units with another source (not the RPi) and it worked first time.  But the RPi will not.

 

Also, the other output of the splitter goes to an LG HDMI TV which ALWAYS works, no matter what settings I try.  I get different resolutions, overscans and underscans, etc, because I'm changing all the settings, but the AJA HA5 refuses to lock to the signal or pass it through no matter what the signal is.

 

This switcher cost a hell of a lot more than the RPi, and so did the AJA, so I am assuming I am using quality gear here.

 

Anyone have any idea how to get a working combination?

 

And can you set a new resolution attempt without having to reboot?

  • Have you tried forcing DVI mode using: "hdmi_drive=1" instead of HDMI?

     

    You could also try boosting the signal power out of the RPi using "config_hdmi_boost=4"  (or up to 7 if that does not work).

     

    Otherwise, you are on the right track of just testing over and over again until it works.  Unfortunately, I do not know of a way to reset the screen settings without restarting the RPi - so that seems like your only option.

     

    Suggested settings:

    Setting One (Forced HDMI, 1080p 30Hz):

    hdmi_drive=2

    hdmi_mode=1

    hdmi_group=34

     

    Setting Two (Forced HDMI, 1080p 25Hz):

    hdmi_drive=2

    hdmi_mode=1

    hdmi_group=33

    Setting Three (Forced HDMI, 1080p 24Hz):

    hdmi_drive=2

    hdmi_mode=1

    hdmi_group=32

    I had tried all of the above.

     

    But I figured it out.  I loaded omxplayer and used its switches (-d -r -y) to modify the hdmi output of the RPi to adapt to the resolutions of the file I am playing, and then I messed around with the file resolutions and framerates until I got 1920x1080, 29.97 interlaced.  Then the AJA was thrilled.

     

    And then I was thrilled, because I discovered that after I have played a file that way, the HDMI output REMAINS(!!!!!!!) this format until you change it.  So even when the video has finished, you still get all of your commandline text going HSDSI through the AJA.  Which is fantastic for me.

     

    Next, I made a bootup routine that plays a one second clip with omxplayer -d -r -y at the correct framerate, and then any subsequent videos are played without that combination of switches, and they will leave the HDMI setup alone.

     

    I also tried it without the HDCP stripping splitter, and it worked anhway, So I'm doubly happy.

    Well good for you!!

     

    But you should be able to set the correct mode without playing a video on startup each time.

    1920x1080, 29.97 interlaced

    So now all you have to do is put these settings in the config.txt file and it should work.
