3D Viewer for Raspberry Pi

We are working hard on a 3D Viewer for Raspberry Pi : http://pi3dviewer.quickmvp.com/5

For those who don't know what is Raspberry Pi : The Raspberry Pi is a credit-card sized computer that plugs into your TV and a keyboard. It is a capable little computer which can be used in electronics projects, and for many of the things that your desktop PC does, like spreadsheets, word-processing and games. It only costs $35. (http://www.raspberrypi.org/)

It is great tool for all 'makers', engineers, hobbyist and creative minded folks!

In addition it will be be helpful to get kids interested in STEM and engineering fields.

We are currently planning to support following popular 3D file formats
1. SketchUp (http://www.sketchup.com)
2. STL (Used widely in 3D printing)
3. OBJ
4. DXF

It will cost less than a burger ($5).

Let us know what you think and how it can offer you more value. If you want certain features to be added just let us know.

Thank you!

Very nice that someone has made a viewer for the Pi.  I'm still having a hard time figuring out when I would need a 3D viewer on the Pi.  My brain goes immediately to 3d printing but since I can't model on the Pi I wouldn't want to use it as a viewer either.  The only other use with the Pi and printing would be running a print server of some sort.   Maybe this could fit into the AEC industry but you would need to support more file fromats like DWF or FBX.  Can you explain where you see this being used?  What's the max file for each format?

    Hi Nate,

You got it right. One prime are where we see it being used is to examine the files before 'printing' it on 3D printers hooked to Raspberry Pi.

Raspberry Pi is developed with the intention to promote basic computer science in schools. In accordance with that philosophy, it can be an useful utility to get kids interested in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) fields early on. After all if pictures is worth 1000 words, 3D is worth 10,000 words. We hope Pi 3D Viewer will help shape some of the future engineers and scientists!!

    Thanks!
