Oh no! My Raspi 2 doesn't work!

Don't panic. It's my fault.

You might like to know what went wrong, in case you make the same mistake as me.

I plugged in each of my SDXC cards and none of them would boot up. I went to the website to check for a Pi2 image and there were only the main versions.

I think the answer is in the changes to memory which requires a different Raspi-config setting. I burnt the latest image to an SDXC card (Class 10) and it booted perfectly. When setting the Turbo mode there is a new setting for the Raspi 2 which sets a lower rate for the memory.

Booting was not really faster than for a B+. but Raspi-config runs at lightening speed. I installed all my favourite programs with apt-get (I love Geany for programming) and it was really fast compared to the B+. I used to put four or five programs on the same line and go off and make a cup of tea. There is just no time with the new Pi2.

The other news is that the desktop is completely redesigned with that horrible file manager icon replaced by the Redhat version. It all looks very professional whereas the earlier desktop was a bit 'Toys R Us'.

Browsing with Epiphany is a joy.

If you liked the B+, you'll love the Pi2 B.

    SDXC cards are now supported? I did not know. Can 64 GB cards be supported?

    Thanks,

    Clem

    Hi Roy,

    Just picking one comment out of your first post, where exactly is the setting you mention for setting a lower rate for the memory on a RasPi 2?

    Are you talking about in the raspi-config settings still, or somewhere else, as when I looked there yesterday it looked as if the over-clocking options still referred to the B and B+?

    ... and that was after doing an update!

    Thanks.image

    To Clem,

    Just laziness on my part: should be SDHC Sorry.

    To David,

    I'm referring to the image file 2015-01-31-raspbian.zip

    It has the following lines in raspi-config;

    Turbo  1000MHz ARM, 500MHz core, 600MHz SDRAM, 6 overvolt

    Pi2    1000MHz ARM, 500MHz core, 500MHz SDRAM, 2 overvolt

    I might have been lucky not to have blown my SDRAM.

    To anyone who's interested,

    The 'Logout' button on the right-hand-side of the panel is missing. If you want it back, just add an Application Launcher to the panel and leave it at the right-hand-side. Add any application to it. Open file pi/.config/LXDE-pi/panels/panel with leafpad and change the name of the application in the item at the bottom of the file to:

    Plugin {
      type=launchbar
      Config {
        Button {
          id=/usr/share/raspi-ui-overrides/applications/lxde-logout.desktop
        }
      }
    }

    You can check that it's working with,

    lxpanelctl restart

    typed in terminal.

    I have not fitted any heat-sink to the Raspi 2 but it seems to run happily below 40degrees most of the time, even in turbo mode.

    Thanks Roy,

    I guess that is the same raspi-config  that I have, which came from the Raspbian selection from the NOOBs download, which I immediately updated.

    I must confess that I hadn't noticed the Pi2 option at the bottom of the list, although as being the only current option it is probably not really as demanding an 'overclock' as turbo mode on a B or a B+.

    Anyway, now that I have a (probably unnecessary) heatsink fitted, I selected it anyway, and immediately noticed a visible in performance.... even when playing 'kmahjongg'! image

    Just off to have a play with the latest (5.0.1) version of openelec now, and also OSMC!
