Raspberry Pi 2 is unstable.

Today has received the Pi2 and was totally disappointed. Is very unstable. I do not even managed to set up the system. After a minute or two system is down. Then apparently fray fs continue after any issues downloading the same message "End Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)". That's all.image

    I think Gough's comments are important. It is best to burn a new image from this year's distribution and choose the overclocking suited to the 2B.

    However, I have another gotcha. I went via a new image and booted OK. Then I did an upgrade. From then on, boots and reboots got past the kernel, drivers and mounting stage, but froze in a black screen before reaching the desktop. Sometimes it would work for a while and then the mouse and keyboard (single wireless dongle) would freeze or else the whole system would freeze.

    After several cycles of backing up the card after upgrading and loading software and rebuilding after crashes, I established that the wifi dongle plugged straight into one of the USB ports would cause the problem. Connecting via a powered port solved the problem.

    The wifi dongle does not get hot, but it seems to be taking enough power to disrupt the Raspi. I will try reducing the overclocking and overvoltage to see if that helps.

    The overclocking of the RAM seems to be the problem. The processor temperature never got too high, but there was a decided hot-electronics smell from somewhere. None of the chips on top were at all hot and so it seems it was the memory chip underneath that was cooking. My working config.txt settings are,

    #uncomment to overclock the arm. 700 MHz is the default.

    arm_freq=1000

    core_freq=500

    sdram_freq=450

    over_voltage=2

    The smell of hot electronics has gone (although I took it out of the case so that I could check all the chips for excessive heating) and the RAM chip is just warm. The case has got good ventilation near the memory chip and so I don't think that was the problem. I will let you know if it all goes pear-shaped when it goes back in its box.
