Ideas for a pet tracking system

dkelley810
dkelley810 over 11 years ago

I am looking for some ideas on a tracking system for my two black dogs. when they are let out at night the 'disappear' in the dark. I want to come up with a system to be able to spot where they are.

My idea is some kind of display that I can look at to show where they are. I have about two acres of land that is bordered by woods.

Any ideas are welcome. I work with Raspberry Pi's, Arduino, Linux computers.

Thank you in Advance for your Ideas.

    1) If you need the fully functional tracking system - you should take a look at GSM+GPS modules with user scripts support, such as SIM5320 (isn't cheapest one because of WCDMA support). You could take such module, write a script in a few hours and get a fully functional tracker. Of course there is another option - you could buy such system on Aliexpress/Alibaba/Ebay for $30 and miss all the fun image (i've seen such devices, it's pretty convenient - you call the tracker by your cellphone and tracker returns you its coordinates by text message). The display part is completely on your own.

    2) On small distances you could use some sub-ghz transmitters but ImHO it will be more complicated than the option 1 because you'll need to develop positioning algorithm by yourself. You could read articles about local positioning systems, i believe it would be useful for you if you decide to go that way (but it's really wouldn't be that easy).

    3) Directional microphone + Motors + Arduino = Bark detector! image
