Intruder following using Arduino or Raspberry Pi

Former Member
Former Member over 10 years ago

HI Fellows,
I am working on a project which will use a network of cameras to detect a intruder and apply viola-jones algorithm to differentiate  a human being with other items. Then I will control the movement of cameras  to follow the movement of intruder.

Kindly give me options for microcontroller or pi to be used.

Regards

    Hello Abu,

I suggest to use the PI, maybe sufficient a B+ but PI 2 is better. If you want to approach this solution I can give you a decent support I suppose as I am developing (final phase, the Arduino version is already working)

This is a post of the first Arduino version Soon: TiltPan Arduino Shield for GoPro Cameras (not too performing in some cases and too much limitations)

I have already prototyped the hardware for a more reliable device and software should be updated to run on the PI

    Hi Enrico,
Thanks for posting. I am, desperately , in need of a approach. As different thoughts are mingling into each other. Kindly enlighten me on this So that we can discuss further discuss it.

    Hi Abu,

don't worry, if exist a problem, exist a solution image

Please can you post something more detailed on your project so we can check in depth the best approach? Do you already have the hardware you need? Or, what hardware do you have to manage this project ?

    Hi Enrico,
Actually, i want to get hardware when i get some idea about how i will do it.
I will use ptz dome camera (May be auto tracking but it is very much expensive here in Pakistan) and a Pie and wil start working..:)

Abu, the minimal things you need in my opinion are the PI, 16 Gb of sd card to host the operating system and tests without too much storage space limits and the PI camera (that maybe almost fine).

The core operations you need to take in account are:

    • Camera streaming through the network. This is bare software with many options to do this. In particular I have already explained one possible reliable method to get real-time shooting and share them on the net via web browser in the Meditech project (follow the link for more information: http://www.element14.com/community/community/design-challenges/sci-fi-your-pi/blog/2015/05/11/meditech-the-imaging-component-settings ) but this is not the only described method on the Internet. As far as what I know this part is better to be done at a linux level (most using bash scripting)
    • PWM control for camera movements. I have already developed this part, initially with Arduino platform but then I moved it on the Raspberry with a lot of advantages, including the possibility to manage the camera acquisition with the software while managing the camera movement.

Then I have already developed the model for a dual-servo stable system for tilt-pan the camera. At the actual date the model has been developed for the GoPro usage (some models can connect wita WiFi with full software control too), but I am planning to make the same model using the PI camera with some changes in the hardware architecture. Take a look to the images below to have an idea of how this is done..
