micr sd card will not latch

e14 Contributor
e14 Contributor over 10 years ago

I purchased a Raspberry Pi 2 - Model B from Adafruit in August. About 2 weeks ago it started ejecting the micro sd card and it would not latch into place. I did not see anything wrong so I tried a different card, then blew it out with canned air which did not help. Then I pressed down on it with a screwdriver where I could see some sort of latching mechanism. After that it started latching ok for a couple of weeks but now the problem has returned , and I can not get it to latch. So the pi is not usable because I can not install the micro sd card. When I posted this on the Adafruit forum I learned that they warrant these for 30 days. Since it has been longer than that, I was advised to contact element 14. Thanks for any help.

As with previous issues with products bought from vendors other than E14/Newark/Farnell you need to go back to your re-seller. E14 is not responsible. in your case AdaFruit is. a last ditched possibility would be to replace the SD card holder with a new one, you would need a hot air gun or smething though as it is surface mounted

element14jamie can you confirm please to make sure im not in error with this (I do recall a different issue in the past but the same basic scenario)

Under European consumer protection laws things are pretty clear: You have a claim against the guys who supplied your stuff, and they cannot refer you to someone else who might say: "not our problem!". This last is exactly what's happening. When it does happen, instead of immediately pointing at the law I go along. If it solves my problem: good, If it doesn't the time comes to quote the law....

Under European consumer protection laws they cannot refuse "warranty" claims the first 6 or 12 months. During that period, if you say: "it was broken all along", they have to PROVE (which is difficult) that you mis-treated their product.

But in this case there are a few glitches:

    * You're probably not in the EU.

    * You say it worked fine for a while so "it was broken all along" is not easy to maintain.

    * You might have broken it yourself by bumping it somehwere or poking a screwdriver at it.

Wolff you are right ... I always try with a cheap and small stuff with the providers before deciding if I can serve to them. There is a very big difference and the post-selling assistance is almost essential. Farnell is perfect as far as I see (but I never had to use their assistance directly), rs-elettronica too. I bought very few things from Adafruit and they are lack of direct assistance with the clients. If you can find what you need online on their site, blogs etc. it's ok but then there are no alternatives to have some kind of answer in less than a week, always an evasive answer. From Europe there is also the handicap that they ship only by US mail and there is no way to have a different shipping from them. In my opinion the better is anyway Amazon, especially when the cost of the stuff is some hundreds of euros. Sparfun, despite is directly connected with Adafruit in some way, has a different behaviour, but they are very expensive so it is not the worth.

Claiming with law is always a mess due the long delays in answers, international communication problems and so on...

I've never used Adafruit before so thanks for the tip. 30 day warranty is a bit mean.

rew you're absolutely right as you say, consumer protection laws are not bad in Europe.

However, (you probably are aware - just for others in case they are not), they don't

apply for business purchases (and doesn't have to be a registered company

to be a business) - but I don't know the specifics for that. Anyway, it is a digression,

sorry Mickey for hijacking the thread.

Here in Canada is is unfortunatly common to find even a big retail store only providing 15 - 30 days of coverage, after that you have to deal with the Manufacturer.

For me this was an issue with a Microsoft Surfae Tablet, I had to deal with MS directly as it was passed the 30 Days since I bought it and this was domestic, not commercial too. Having said that, MS was excelent and cross shipped a replacement for free.

So yes, the first step is always with the vendor who sold it to you but then after that it all depends on the product and the region where the item was bought... sorry but the world is very inconsistent in this regard

good luck in getting you unit fixed
