difficulty with microSD with preinstalled Raspbian OS (presumably)

Hi, all.

Can't seem to find an answer to this problem, so I'm starting a new thread.

My fresh-out-of-the-box Raspberry Pi 2 Model B 1GB device with the 8GB microSD card, that says it has Raspbian OS preloaded will not go beyond the raspi-config screen. When the option to expand the filesystem is chosen, the error message is "/dev/root does not exist or is not a symlink. Don't know how to expand",

If I choose finish, it goes to the CLI, with the prompt pi@(none) ~ $

preceded by a suggestion to sudo raspi-config becuase the software is not yet fully configured.

There are other messages complaining of a read-only file system

With the microSD card, there is no write-protection switch. Is there something set inside, electronically? I don't have a microSD reader for my laptop (yet) so I have no easy way of examining it. I guess I will get another card tomorrow (and an adapter) and try to download the current NOOBS onto a different card and see if that works.

any suggestions will be appreciated by this noobie.

The easiest approach would be to try a fresh noobs install onto a different card. If it boots you at least know the hardware is fine.

You can then try a fresh noob install on your existing SD card if you wish.

Will at least give you a spare card. :)

Paul's course of action would be the best. Just be certain to follow the instructions on the RPI website, re: prepping the SD card (SD or SDHC, not SDXC), Win32 Disk Imager to burn the image, etc. (if you are on Windows). Rather than pull down the NOOBS distribution you might want to consider downloading Raspian. That's what most people go with. Save you some download time. I would also go with a Class 10/U1 card. The RPI website states to use a Class 4 card, but that's outdated information. Personally, I use 32GB Class 10 cards with my RPI 2's and B+'s. The website also states if you use an HDMI converter (to DVI, etc.) to use a powered converter, and that some may not work. I've used three unpowered types of HDMI to DVI converter without any problems with my RPI 2/B+. Best of luck!
