Raspberry Pi 2 stopped working, possible causes ?

Hi there,

I have a Rpi 2 that has been a great little desktop addition, and nothing has changed with regard to peripherals or card or anything really. But it has stopped booting altogether. I get both the red and green lights come on instantly and then they stay that way till I turn it off.

It did have a little headache a couple of weeks ago, where it would go to sleep and never wake up, unless powered off then on again.

After that, I would see it from time to time with both lights solid, and it being unresponsive to ping etc... I restarted it a couple of times, and more recently it has started a few times, or done the 2 solid led's trick ... at which point I thought that it was something to do with the SD card (as it gives the same indication when there is no card in it), but I have both tried them in other raspi's, or other cards in this one, to no avail.

Till yesterday, when it was sitting there with both led's blazing, and being unresponsive... and now no amount of card changing, or power cycling will bring it back to life.

As non-digital as this sounds, it didn't just stop working, it kind of degraded until it stopped.

Any thoughts on where to look.

    Hi Brett;

    I'd check the usual culprits in the environment, to be certain you don't have conns being shorted (on a metal table?), a big inductor nearby (like a laser printer), or a fairly strong magnetic field (speaker, microwave, etc.).  A more mundane question: Have you tried a different power supply (at least 2A)?  The kind of degradation over time is the kind of thing you can see when a uC (or SBC) isn't getting enough juice.  Along that same line make certain the contacts on both the PSU and micro USB port look good.  A shot of canned air or DeOxit would clean any contamination (and sulfate, for the latter) off.

    Personally, I have to admit I wouldn't spend much time troubleshooting; other than curiosity or stubbornness.  At $35/per I'd likely just give it a good sendoff with a 24VDC/5A PSU; just to see the filter cap blow and the magic smoke leak out.
