Dead Raspberry Pi, where to start

brettfeeney
brettfeeney over 10 years ago

Hi there,

I have a Raspi 2 that is dead as a doornail, is there a good guide to faultfinding power issues ... and if I do find the issue, what good is it to me ? ... I only ask, as for the cost of it, sending it around by courier would seem less worthwhile, due to it likely being cheaper to get a new one ??.

or shall I just leave it be...

    Hi Brett;

Just to cover all the bases, what makes it seem "dead"?  No video, no activity lights, no IP/MAC on your network, or ???  If you suspect power, have you used a different PSU?  Preferably a known good one capable of pushing at least 2A.

As far as troubleshooting the power there isn't a whole lot exposed.  You could put an o'scope on the voltage regulator to see if it's getting juice.  I don't know if you have default programming running; but if so, you could check whatever GPIO pins being used for activity,

    Brett,

I agree with @Brian Edwards Please post as much information as possible and try doing the basic following tests:

    • Raspberry PI is connected to a HDMI screen with a standard, commercial cable?
    • as you plug-in the power supply (with the display connected), what happens ? Nothing or something? Should see the red light always up - correctly powered - and the green led flashing - reading the boot from the micro sd card -
    • Do the system tries starting? You should see the linux system starting; during the boot cycle you see all the loading process as scrolling text on the screen.
    • Do the red light power then after a while goes off? It maybe a problem of not sufficient power supply.
    • What power supply are you using? I suggest to try with a 2A power unit, to be sure that you have sufficient energy and exclude this possible issue
    • Maybe the micro sd card? Try to see if the card is shown in a different device (e.g. a PC), if possible. Take a screenshot of the content listing of the micro sd card, just to see.
    • Where did you got the operating system? What distrbution are you using and version?
    • If possible provide a second 4Gb micro sd card to make another boot image.

If you have other peripherals connected to the pi, e.g. camera, PiFace components etc, please disconned all to see what is the behaviour of the PI without any other influencing component.

All where possible product a screenshot, photo and - the best - a power-up sequence short video to see what is doing your Raspberry PI.

    Enrico
