Multicomp  CBRPP-TS-BLK/WHT - Pi enclosure for 7" display

Dear Sir,

 

I bought the aforementioned enclosure and according to Raspberry Pi 7” Touchscreen Display, the power is supposed to be fed into the adapter board unless two micro USB cables are being used.

Unfortunately, it appears that the enclosure only has a hole aligned to the raspberry PI instead of the adapter board.

 

So far, I have not been able to find someone who has tried powering the adapter board from the raspberry Pi using 5v and Ground GPIO connections.

 

Could you please confirm that this is either possible in such way, or that the enclosure is badly designed.

    Its a bit ambiguous, but according to this blog post not written by a documentation writer, but by a director of software: https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/the-eagerly-awaited-raspberry-pi-display/

    there is an option (3) indicated as:

     

    3) GPIO jumpers

    Attach two of the supplied jumpers to connect 5V and GND from the Pi.

     

    Given that there are no official schematics, I can only speculate if it will work but worth a try.

    Dear Shabaz,

     

    That is the way I connected them both.

    But according to http://www.element14.com/community/docs/DOC-78156/l/raspberry-pi-7-touchscreen-display you are then supposed to power the whole through the display adapter board and not the Pi.

    The enclosure only allows the Pi micro USB to be reachable.

     

    Therefore I wonder if the display adapter board is designed to receive 5v from its GPIO rather than the other way around.

    in the case of the Pi it seems its 5v is directly linked to the 5v from the micro USB, therefore I expect it would support the load.

    Maybe not ?

    Hi Thierry,

     

    I agree there is a discrepancy between the doc that you refer to, and the (slightly unclear) post on the Raspberrypi.org site.

    I don't know if the header pins are directly linked to the microUSB because we don't have the schematics to the Raspberry Pi.

    It seems a very small risk to try it. If it works, do report back so that others also can learn from your results.

    Any chance I blow the Pi immediately?

    Of course I would lose some money but I am more concerned about it working for some time and then set fire to my house while I am away.

    Do you believe this is feasible?

    Anything is possible, but i wouldn't think those scenarios are likely (as mentioned the risk is low).

    Without schematics (and the poorly described option (3) mentioned earlier) it is just a guess.
