Can the new 7" touchscreen be powered via the adapter board pins?

One of the documented powering options is to power the display adapter board via the micro-usb and connect/power the PI using two jumper wires from the pins on the display adapter board.

Is it also possible to power the display directly via the same two pins (5V/GND) and power the PI "some other way", e.g. from a IQaudio DigiAmp+?

    The safe way is to follow the prescribed method, there may be other voltages being generated from the main input to the display board, and there is also an ATTINY88 MPU on the board for power management that may not work correctly if you provide power differently

     

    you can use a short USB lead from the display to the PI is you want as well and this would mean you dont need the jumpers or power the two boards independently vis two seperate USB leads

    I want to build a small "network receiver/renderer" using the PI + Touchscreen + IQAudio DigiAmp+. The latter has a small Class-D amplifier and therefore needs 15-19V DC. It powers the PI through the "GPIO header". So I use a "normal" notebook 19V PSU. But I also need to power the touchscreen. Going the "prescribed method" for the touchscreen I either

    a. use a seperate PSU for the display

    b. use a 19V notebook PSU which also has a 5V USB output

    c. take a micro USB cable, cut"in half", solder jumper connectors to the open end and hook it to the 5V output of the DigiAmp+ with the other end hooked to the display.

    Or take the inofficial route and "reverse power" the display via its pins: I was just curious if this works.

    Not 100% sure if option D would work, this would be a suck it and see and risk damage to the display inless someone else has already tried this and can confirm

     

    I would say option C seems to be the safest and most lightly to give good reliability

    Hi did you manage to try your options? What worked for you without frying anything?

     

    I'm currently doing option "a": it works but there's a bit of an issue where you have to power the display first, and then the IQAudio Digiamp+ (which in turn powers the Pi) right after.

     

    It's not ideal, and I would really appreciate it if there's a way to power the pi, amp and display from a single source.

    So I went with option c: cable with microUSB on one end, and red and black wires on the other. I got rid of the green and white data wires.

     

    I can confirm it works.

     

    I've attached the red wire to the 5v GPIO pin (no 2) and the black wire to the GND pin (no 6), and connected the microUSB side to the display's power. Following that, I proceeded with stacking the Digiamp+ on top of the Pi 3, letting the amp give power to the Pi and, in parallel, to the display via GPO pin 2 and 6.

    I have a RaspPi 3 & 7" TS (Touch Screen) in a SmartiPi Case, so I went w/ option (a) b/c the SmartiPi-Case came w/ a Y-adapter for micro-USB-Power. This way I power-up just what I need to. ex: Running Minibian just on the RaspPi: accessing the RaspPi via Putty (SSH client). No Keybd, Mouse, Display Needed. Of course changing uSDcards (Debian, Minibian) is a Pain in the SmartiPi Case is a Pain, but definitely do-able. AAR options (a-d) are do-able. Just have your GROUNDs tied together
