I would like to use the ChipKit Max32

If you are talking about the interface between the Max32 and the computer running the IDE it uses a USB interface.
The Max32 uses a USB to serial converter chip to convert the serial interface on the PIC32 processor to a USB interface
connected to the computer running the IDE.
