Add a status LED and Start button?

Hi guys, recently got a Cirrus Audio Card and attached it to my Pi. I was wondering if there was a way of connecting a status LED and a start/stop button to start and stop the recording script. Is this possible and if so, what additional code would be needed?

This is a multi-stepped project.

First you need some hardware to connect to GPIO pins on Raspberry pi like https://projects.drogon.net/raspberry-pi/gpio-examples/tux-crossing/3-more-leds-and-a-button/
Next you can use python code to read button and set LED's.
Lastly add code to react and call the arecord routines.
