Raspberry Pi 3 Windows 10 Wifi

Former Member
Former Member over 9 years ago

Hello everyone,

I was considering purchasing the Raspberry Pi 3 for the purposes of running Windows 10 on it. However, I have heard on some threads that the onboard Wifi is not compatible with Windows 10. Will I need to purchase an external dongle, or will the built in Wifi work?

Thanks,

Johnnyg150

I can not tell right now since I am a Linux user. But as far as Rasbian is concerned, I have used RPi 3 wireless straight for 30 days without a hiccup transmitting data to the Internet frequently through out. As for Windows 10 IoT note:

In its new IoT Core preview build, the Windows team is enabling support for the new Raspberry Pi 3 board. It promises more features will roll out in coming weeks.

Microsoft will continue to release preview builds and to collect user feedback in order to enable more capabilities for Raspberry Pi on Windows 10. User feedback on previous builds has resulted in support for popular WiFi dongles, including the Raspberry Pi dongle.

I'm not really sure whether the wifi is compatible or not, but before we go too far down that road, we need to clarify that you understand that this is not Windows 10 like runs on a PC. This is Windows 10 IOT, which is really just a kernel with an API that you can code to to read sensors from the GPIO, etc.

So if you are expecting a Windows 10 desktop experience, like running web browsers, and other apps, this is not the right platform. If you have a Windows 10 machine already, with visual studio, and you know how to program, then this may be what you are looking for, you write the code on your pc and upload it to the ras pi running Win 10 IOT, and it executes the program you just wrote.

With the current release of Windows 10 for IoT. the onboard WIFI and Bluetooth is not supported. It will be soon though as MS is working on the drivers

There are many inexpensive USB WIFI and Bluetooth adapters available in the mean time that are supported. For WIFI, the Official Dongle works very well as do many others

for more specifics, look here :- https://ms-iot.github.io/content/en-US/win10/SupportedInterfaces.htm

hope that helps, btw, what are you planning on using the PI for with Windows 10 (You did not say windows 10 for IoT but just Windows 10) ?

Thanks for answering my question. I am new to E14 and didn't know how long this would take.

Is it possible to run windows 10 desktop on Pi?
