Why is it that most Single-board computers are based off the ARM chipset instead of x86-x64?

I'm not sure if anyone has really noticed or paid attention, but i have noticed ever since the single board computer has taken off (like the Raspberry pi) that they are mostly ARM based, why is that? I think it would be a lot easier if they were x86-x64 based, because it would be easier to use programs that you are used to using instead of finding ARM versions.

    CISCs are great for single core, simple tasks. But parallel processing in a CISC, I remember the 1980s... The Master / Slave MOS 65xx series. I used to bang my head against the wall trying to debug these damn things.

     

    Here's what I'm talking about; 6502 CPU and it's slaves of asymmetrical processing.

    That is a true state of affairs in this world even today. Facts do stnd the test of time where as fiction comes and goes.

    And Marvel applied the ARM technology to their controllers, etc.

    A few basic reasons that i can see:

    Cheaper lots of manufacturer

    Lots of IP to make SOCs so lots of cheap supported hardware

    Low power designs...important for mobile use

    ARM is a license owner so they make a common platform which is good for vendors programmers etc as it's only one thing to learn much like PCs are common on the desktop

    Hi Matthew,

    One of the reasons for moving to ARM was copyright issues.

    The 8086 series was controlled by Intel, which prevented anyone from taking that architecture and moving it into a new domain.

     

    There has always been limited distributed and special purpose processor architectures.  Most remained obscure because they were focused upon specific applications, which limited their exposure and growth.

     

    What ARM did was to take a simple basic architecture and put it onto a silicon chip and then allowed users to add other specific core capability to build their systems on a chip. (SOC).

    The advantage to this approach allowed everyone to share the basic software to program the ARM and then just add libraries to access the custom parts.

    Over time, the overall portfolio grew to the point where the ARM family provided venders with a simple way to turn their product ideas into custom chips while retaining the core hardware and software support already in existence.

     

    So that is why ARM is now a dominant product in the MCU arena.  They were nimble enough to come up with a broad solution based upon a standard core.

     

    There were many systems engineers like myself who wanted Intel to do that with the 8086 architecture, but they were focused upon an entirely different business and dismissed the MCU area as insignificant to their bottom line.

     

    I cannot fault Intel as they have made a lot of money with their focus.  Compared to Intel, ARM is still a very small part of the  market and will remain so due to cost and scale issues.

     

    So I share your dilemma.  It would have been so useful to have an ARM type model to build 8086 compatible embedded projects, but it was not to be.

     

    So use the ARM devices.  They now have the support to keep them viable for the for seeable future.

     

    Time has passed by for the 8086 family option.  Some of us consider it an opportunity lost, but ARM correctly filled a need and made its fortune.

     

    Such is life.

    Intel did license their technology - How many companies make a variant of 8051?

    ARM must have been a much lower cost license....

    I have a few hundred ARM cpus where Licence + cost-to-make-a-chip is below $0.32. I bought them because I couldn't believe they could make them for that kind of money.

    I recall that Intel did try to license Atom several years ago to compete with ARM in the embedded space.  I don't recall exactly why it was a disaster, but I think it was primarily that Atom was much more expensive than ARM for similar performance.  I think Atom's power consumption was competitive, but still not as good as ARM which has pushed low power ab ovo.

     

    ARM license fees have traditionally been very low.  They prefer volume over high per-unit cost.  Intel remembers that IIRC the brand-new 8080 sold for $300 in single units and prices their chips accordingly.  Intel is a much bigger company with much higher overhead.  ARM began with basically no money and basically no staff so they have always been very frugal.

    Hi Douglas,

     

    Yes they did, but by then they had locked most of the major users up in long term contracts and the licenses did not allow for poaching.

    If I recall correctly, Intel released the 80186 that was mainly used in embedded applications (was in a series of modems if memory serves me right), and was produced by Intel up until the mid to late 2000's.  The drawback was the cost associated with the chip, if I remember right in trays of 1000 the chip itself cost as much as a Raspberry Pi.
