Raspberry Pi display issues

Hi, so I have had a Model 2 B for a while now and cannot get it working.

At first, I tried to SSH into it but figured that it hasn't been enabled on the Pi. The Pi is running Raspbian Wheezy 3.18 or some similar image (2015-05-05 release date).

I have tried hooking it up to a monitor via a HDMI > VGA converter ( https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00C0Y6BQG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1, supposedly works well with the Pi) but the screen is non-responsive to any input from the mouse and keyboard and pressing any buttons on the monitor says that it is in power saver mode. ( http://imgur.com/a/ealwP ). The monitor works fine with other devices so I'm certain it's not the issue here.

The Pi itself is powered through a 5V AC adapter and there are solid red and green lights on it.

Any suggestions?

    A few questions and suggestions

What is the capacity of the power adapter ?

What make and model of SD card are you using, where did you get it ?

Do you see anything on the screen during boot / right after applying power

Download and re flash the SD Card with the latest Jessie Linux version, this will work SSH enabled right away, will work with HDMI screen right away and will work with supported mouse and keyboard.

Biggest problems I have seen with people having issues with their PI is POWER, next is a BAD SD card.

Hey Peter, Thanks for your reply.

So I actually won this Rapsberry Pi Starter Kit through a competition and it came with the Raspbian pre-installed on a Kingston 8GB microSD.

    The adapter is 100-240V, 50/60Hz, 0.5A max input with 5V and 2A out ( this one, Vilros XHY050200LUCH 5V 2A AC Adapter ).

After connecting everything, the monitor is non-responsive. I know for sure that the HDMI adapter and the monitor are working fine but I will try what you are suggesting.

On the face of it, the power adapter looks like it should work ok, it certainly claims to have more than enough amps at 5V

Look forward to seeing if you get it working

If Pi 2, I would re-do the Raspbian release to make sure you have the correct supported drivers software. Sometimes these SD cards sit around and are outdated.
