7" Raspberry Pi Display with Arduino

m_montana
m_montana over 9 years ago

Hi,

I am working on my capstone project at university, we are working with Arduino to make an automated system. One component will be a touchscreen display. However we have access to the 7" touchscreen display offered by element14 for use with the raspberry pi. I was hoping someone could tell me, if possible, of a way to get this board to display inputs from an Arduino board. Maybe an easy means of transferring information from Arduino to Raspberry pi to display?

Thanks for your time.

I would use a simple UART interface since it is available on both the Raspberry Pi and Arduino. On the Arduino side use Serial Write/Read to the correct port in case there are two or more available. This would be written in C of course. On Raspberry Pi, depending on software and hardware, be aware there are two possible UARTS. One is software by default. Th other is hardware. The difference is the name of course. Read RPi Serial Connection - eLinux.org  for details before proceeding. I will stop here, but for any specific questions, ask here. Good luck with the project.

Curious why you would recommend the UART interface instead of the USB? It's a simple matter to print out of the USB on the arduino, and just as simple to read from the usb on the Pi. You are basically using the same serial libraries in both cases and you get the added benefit of powering the arduino and having a clean ready made cable.

As a matter of fact I did this recently, I encoded some sensor data into a JSON object and passed it out the USB port on the Arduino when requested , and I used the python JSON and serial libraries on the Pi to make the request and receive the resultant data.

    Very clean.
