Perhaps take a look at Project Opencast/Matterhorn

    http://www.opencast.org/

Part of that project (PyCA) uses a Raspberry Pi as an audio/video capture device which allows it to be ingested into Opencast.

Your starting point is to use an external, mains powered USB hard drive to save the video and audio drives. This is the easiest way to save large video files.

The next link shows you how to record a 15 minute period with the Pi camera. It is fairly obvious how to increase the period by changing the command line instruction (15 mins is about 890,000 seconds).

Stand alone video surveillance system with Raspberry Pi - 2

There are no audio inputs to the Pi. I have found USB connected desk microphones for under £5, but why not borrow a USB connected, mains powered mixer and microphone. Use Audacity to record.

The next challenge is to combine the video file and the audio file. I have not tried this with the Raspi, but OpenShot will allow you to import the two files and move the audio backwards and forwards in time until in sync with the video. Don't forget, if you want to view mp4 files on the Raspi, you will need a licence.

License keys - Raspberry Pi Store

The mp4 is then decoded and displayed very well by the Raspi hardware.

To avoid all the video/audio editing, here is a very interesting tool that produces a combined video and audio file from a USB audio source and the Pi camera.

I know the first solution can be made to work because I have used all the software and hardware, myself. However, picam is a more sensible solution and the intellectual challenge of understanding and using it is more likely to impress your tutor.
