Wifi issue any help please?

alshah

Hi I have a rpi 3b with sensehat attached and a touchscreen, been working fine most o fthe time, I updated it to Pixel desktop.

Issue I have is that daily I lose the ability to connect over wifi - I get an IP address from home dhcp router, I try and connect SSH using putty or tightvncserver but not reachable till I connect Ethernet, get a second IP address for that and then try and connect again on wifi and works fine, disconnect Ethernet and again works fine - will continue till next day or overnight shutdown when I have to go through above again.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Al

    Hi Al,

I recall I saw something like that when the pi 3 was first released. However I've not seen it recently.

I found I needed to ping from the Pi to wake up the WLAN, like if it was asleep or something. I suspected some config somewhere was not correct.

Could you get another microSD card, and download and install the latest image on it? Just to see if the problem disappears.

Also, (this might sound strange) but do try a different power supply too, and remove the add-ons like the sense hat and screen, and as many USB connected devices as you can (especially if you have any hard disk, Flash mem or SSD attached), to see if it makes a difference. You can add them later to narrow down the issue.

I also found that there was a fair bit of RFI susceptibility, (or could have been a fair bit of RFI generated from those attached devices). With the official Pi power supply and no SSD connected, all is well.

Thanks, I did try a fresh new build on a new microSD - I now run Pixel desktop and have latest OS, It seems the Ethernet wakes up the Wifi - I cant ping from rpi until I connect ethernet even tho it gets a valid ip address from wifi router.

The power confuses me as it works fine once woken. I think its more to do with lan config somehow but I am no expert.

I tried removing hat and display assuming it kept same wifi IP as ttl is 1 day. no joy till again ethernet plugged in. It worked fine after ethernet unplugged too.

    Thanks tho for helping

Try updating wifi drivers, if that doesn't work I don't know what to do

I've not used my Pi for a while so not sure of how the networking is set up so you may need to tweak things accordingly but how about if you use sudo ifdown wlan0 and then sudo ifup wlan0 to disconnect and restart the wifi network? Will Wifi then get a new lease from DHCP and start working again? How about if you restart the networking service? Another thing to try could be to set it up to be pinging another machine periodically and see if regular usage on that interface keeps things working. Finally do you have another WiFi dongle you can try in case it's an issue with either the Wifi device or the driver for it?

    Best Regards,

    Rachael

That's a good idea, to check with another WiFi dongle.

I had a near-similar thing, another WiFi dongle inserted in the Pi 3 worked just fine. I had a SSD attached.

It was driving me crazy, it seemed a really bizzare situation, but then I started noticing the WLAN reliability improving immensely (but still some loss) with ferrites and keeping cables positioned away from much of the circuitry : )

For my scenario I didn't really need the WLAN so I didn't investigate further at the time.

I remember a similar problem a time back where the problem was not the Pi 3, but the router. Check the router and the logs to verify contact by Pi 3. Maybe that will help diagnose any problem.

Do you have any static IP? This could be a problem if one matches a dynamic one.
