Why can I not set the WIFI to 802.11b on a Rpi3?

Good day all I have setup a Rpi3 as a WIFI access point but it will not allow me to use the 802.11 b protocol at all. Why would this be

That sounds odd. The WIFI chip is connected through an SPI/ MMC like connection, while the bluetooth is connected through an UART connection. Why would a chip that already has a "reasonable" interface with the CPU like SPI/MMC/SD also use an inferior interface like UART? P.S. Everybody says the raspberry pi has 802.11n. So maybe b/g is simply not supported?

What I found... RPi3 uses a Broadcom BCM43438 chip which provides 2.4GHz 802.11n wireless LAN, Bluetooth Low Energy, and Bluetooth 4.1 Classic radio support.
