Pi Desktop don't boot without HDMI?

llaske
llaske over 7 years ago

Hi all,

I bought recently a Pi desktop to use my Raspberry Pi 3 as a school server to expose contents using WiFi.

Pi desktop box is interesting because it come with a SSD slot and a power on/off button so could be started/stopped safely.

BTW it seems to me than the Pi desktop don't want to boot without an HDMI connected and it's specifically my use case.

More precisely, here what happens: during a "normal" boot the red LED on the raspberry PI board turn on then the green LED turn on and blink.

It's what happens with the PI desktop when the HDMI is connected.

With the PI desktop with HDMI not connected, the red LED turn on but the green LED stay off. Plus the RaspberryPI is connected with a RJ45 wire and I don't see it on the network.

Is there anyone that experimented this issue ?

Is there a way to force Pi desktop to boot even without HDMI connected ?

Any help or pointer will be appreciated.

You want to setup headless mode. Here is a good guide to do that.

    Thanks for this answer.

I've tried to reinstall the system from a Raspbian Stretch Lite then apply Pi Desktop deb package. But Pi Desktop package seems not compatible with Stretch Lite, I've got a kernel panic after trying to reboot...

Did you test headless mode with Pi Desktop ?

Sorry for the very late reply, Got busy with Summer and holidays, Never tried it on that setup,  I find it's not always the best bet to go with the semi bleeding edge vs the old solid stable systems. Unless you need something new in the kernel or libs package.

Oh with the kernel panic did you just overwrite the system/upgarade or remove then install the package. With SD cards they are not like hard disks overwriting kernel areas maybe overlapped ?I have had odd issues on ocassion with it and that might be due to using a different micro-sd to Sd card adapter in the laptop. At least that was what i decided to blame when i have had similar kernel panics after a change. It wasn;t me! :-)

What's the reason you selected Raspbian Lite?  I'm assume I'm missing something here, I do not use the Pi Desktop. But I use Raspbian Lite, only when I want a text based system (with lower memory and storage requirements).  Raspbian Lite can run headless, but I only use SSH as the user interface.  If you would like a remote connection with a full graphical interface, full Raspbian (not Lite) has VNC Server included ( a great feature, thanks realVNC), so remote users can connect to your rPi with the VNC client.

Rasbian lite allows a smaller download and you can use APT GET to install needed packages. Just no desktop which is great for headless mode.
