Help building a geocache

Question

I would like to build a project using a raspberry pi that gives a user an small led sequence which they must repeat. Successfully doing so gives them a combination lock code via an lcd screen so they may open the cache. If you don’t know what a geocache is go to geocaching.com

Is this possible?

Power consumption may be an issue with the R-Pi given that geocaches tend to spend their time in remote locations.

The Ben Heck Show episode gets around this by using an AT Tiny microcontroller in low power sleep mode to wake up the BeagleBone Black only when there is verified activity via a passcode.

An Atmel microcontroller in PicoPower mode may be a better choice for this, however it is not clear at this stage whether or not this has to run on a R-Pi and whether power is an issue or not. e.g. school/college project vs actual real world installation.
