Pi 1 B USB not recognising keyboard or mouse

Question

I have a Raspberry Pi 1B and the USB has stopped recognising my mouse and keyboard. I have checked that the USB ports are getting 5v power, and when I boot up I don't see any error messages, but neither mouse or keyboard works. I have tried using a powered USB hub as well, but that doesn't work either. Any suggestions?

After reflection, this is a post of little to no value, since the Pi you are referring to doesn't have this hardware configuration. Augh well I have it written so I will let it stand. "Move along folks nothing to see here." Don't you just hate input that has no bearing on your problem. On my Pi 3B+ I have experienced a USB device fail to be detected on one USB port but work on another. Upper right USB port no, lower left USB port yes. After witnessing this, I look around the room and think, I hope no one saw that or they will think I'm nuts! Sean

Does the Ethernet port work?

One potential issue is the SMSC LAN chip which also provides two USB hub ports on the board may have failed over time. I've experienced this on one of my older B+ boards, which resulted in intermittent Ethernet and USB. Unfortunately, it's often not economical to attempt a repair if this chip has failed as it requires very careful SMD soldering.

As I mentioned earlier, I suspect your SMSC LAN chip has failed as it's responsible for the USB to Ethernet and USB hub functionality on the Raspberry Pi Model B. If you change to a known good image and still cannot get a network link, perhaps plug in keyboard/mouse/HDMI and check the output of dmesg, ifconfig and lsusb. If the SMSC/Microchip LAN chip does not show up or has no active link, that's a good symptom that the chip has failed. Likewise, if the downstream attached peripherals do not work or do not show up, that's also a sign. If you wish to salvage it, you could "kind of" turn it into a Model A by removing the SMSC LAN chip altogether and trying to bridge the D- and D+ lines coming into the chip to one of the USB ports (as the A is basically sans SMSC LAN chip, hence single port straight from the SoC), assuming that the SoC has not been damaged. - Gough
