Trouble with Samba

rcayot
rcayot over 5 years ago

I am trying to access a windows share from my RPi 4.  I followed the instructions here:https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/remote-access/samba.md

i think allwas well, but when I try to mount the share, I get asked for a password.  The only trouble is that my Windows user account, which is also administrator has no password!

i tried creating a pw to see if that would work, and Windows told me it could not create a pw!

my real question is, does the pw prompt mean I have successfully queried the Windows pc?  If so, I gues my issue is with windoze and not samba.

thanks for any help.

To the last question, Yes to accessing the share. Unless you need security for some reason, I would follow this: https://websiteforstudents.com/create-shares-everyone-full-access-windows-10-server/

My guess would be the user id is not ADMIN, but maybe Guest which is builtin with very little authority...

Thanks, but it SAYS user is admin, and this is Windows 7.

    Hi Roger,

Lots of Samba-related links here, from an older thread concerning Pi and Samba:

A File Server That Won't Share Shares

I don't know if any will solve your problem, but hopefully it can get you some distance. If you find the solution, do report back on the resolution, to help others.

I don't know how popular this is, there are other ways to access files on the Pi - but I don't know your use-case.

did you try to add samba user password by typing: smbpasswd -a  yourusername , and typing the password on your Raspberry Pi?

thanks all.  With the understanding that it was on the windows pc end, I went back.  Evidently only users with a PW can get on, so I set myself a PW and it worked.  Don't know why first time I had trouble setting myself a PW.

Again, thanks for thw quick replies.
