Wolfson Pi Audio Card

MichaelL65
MichaelL65 over 12 years ago

This looks like a really good addition to the RPi. Just a few questions:

1. When will it be available?

2. What will it cost?

3. When will we get a technical data sheet?

I may be able to make it into a guitar pedal board now...

    Hi,

    Time really is rolling by!

When are you going to sell the Audio Card?  2013,  2014,  2015 ??

If it is  too difficult to program?      Other people appear to have had some success with SPI audio cards on the Rasperry  ---- See  HiFiBerry Mini  by Crazy Audio.

    regards

    p

Well, it's getting close to a month past the planned release date. Last I heard they were working on drivers.

Guys, if this is a truly open source project, the drivers will get fixed by the community. They don't need to be perfect.

    Hi Michael,

sorry for the silence. The more user testing we did as we got close to the launch the more things we found that we weren't happy about. I appreciate your point on the drivers not needing to be perfect, but there are a few use cases that we really want to work out of the box.

We want the board to offer playback and/or record via spdif, headset, dmics, linein. We want the audio output to utilise the full range of the codec and be programmable between 16/24 bit, 44.1/48/96/192khz

It took us a bit of time to get it all working but we think we've almost cracked it. We've had to work with vendors of other parts on the board to maximise the full system performance and it's now going through user testing. Having missed one date I'm reluctant to give another ( ! ) but barring any more gotchas we should be good to start taking orders in mid Jan.

We've got hardware stock in place now so we're very keen to get shipping. Sorry for the delay and thanks for the continued interest.

    Regards,

    Eddie

    Hi Patrick,

thanks for your post. Please see my reply to Michael, hopefully this goes some way to explain the delay.

    Cheers,
    Eddie

I'm glad you're making progress, and it looks like you have created quite a handy addition to the R-Pi. Sorry if I'm coming across as impatient. I'm just anxious to get ahold of one.

I'm involved in a bit of manufacturing myself at my day job, and I understand that things outside your control can make ship dates impossible, but I have also learned that communications with clients is essential when these things come up. Maybe you could post a short paragraph summary now and then about what is happening, what we can look forward to, and what you plan to do next - that sort of thing.  For myself, that would let me know you are working on it, it hasn't turned into vaporware, and you keep enthusiasm for the product when it does ship. Maybe that's overkill, but it is how I do it.

    Hey, Eddie!

Any chance we can get some more details on the card itself? (So we can see how the WM5102 will be implemented on a hardware level?) Maybe a preliminary list of function calls for the driver?

I have several ideas for musical projects for the RPi, and I'm anxious to get a jump on them!

Hi all, OK lots of work over the holidays as well as last week and we're almost there.

What we've got left to do is release the new Kernel, finish testing the software image and get the documentation completed.

Beyond that we need to get the usual support and PR elements in place and we should be good to go.

Again I'm loathe to commit a date too early but we're on track to start shipping before the end of Feb.

    Cheers,
    Eddie

    Hi Michael,

At the heart of the WM5102 Audio Hub is a 50MHz proprietary Wolfson Audio DSP (ADSP). It is a key element defining the unique functionality of the part and differentiation vs other audio solutions. It was designed for ultra-low power processing of audio functions such as voice trigger, noise cancellation (transmit, receive and ambient), audio playback products, speakerphone enhancement and many more audio and other sensor processing. As well as running Wolfson algorithms, we open the core up to 3rd Parties to port and develop solutions to it via the Wolfson Partner Programme.

We are working hard to make ADSP open to all of our customers by putting in place high quality hardware and software tools as well as the documentation and engineering support required of such a high performance core. It's going to take some time to get this into shape and won't happen overnight. We will keep the community informed of progress in this area. The reason we’ve chosen this chip for the board as opposed to a standalone Codec is to provide the latest in ultra-low power audio DAC & ADC technology with multiple audio inputs/outputs to suit portable as well as mains powered applications and to give us a platform to grow in the future.
