How do I use a laptop screen for the raspberry pi?

Former Member

Hi,

I have a Samsung LTN173kt01 Laptop screen from an old laptop, I took it out of my laptop and wish to use it for my raspberry pi. There is nothing wrong with it so i thought that I maybe able to use it, but I don't know much about how to connect it to my raspberry... It has some strange pins that I have not seen, and I would like some help figuring out how to get it to work with my raspberry.

I also have the datasheet attached in a PDF if that is any help.

I am no LCD whiz but from the docs it seems the connector is a ribbon flat cable I-PEX-20455-040E.

From here you need to convert it to a HDMI connector and may or not be an easy path.

From what I found Beagle Board folk went this path by converting the flat ribbon cable to a 40 pin header in this board:

    http://www.elinux.org/Animal_LVDS_Mini_Board

It can be bought here http://www.tincantools.com/LVDS-20455-Adapter-Board.html

The main problem may be you would need a bit more than just an adapter as it seems you need a controller board to communicate via I2C with the screen for setup.

Look at this guys and may be some of their products may work, but you may end up expending more money to use that old LCD than going for a complete solution with a new - smaller - LCD.

This is an LVDS to HDMI converter http://www.chalk-elec.com/?page_id=1280#!/~/product/category=3094861&id=14647633

All this I am posting is just for your information. I'd rather wait for a guy with more experience than me interfacing with LCDs as I don't think I would really go for it myself.

What I did was to buy some cheapo car rear view monitors to put a screen on my raspberrys like those:

3 5" TFT LCD Color Screen Monitor for Car Rear Reverse Rearview Backup Camera | eBay

You have them on may sizes and shapes and it was pretty easy end cheap.

I found a kit on e-bay which allowed me to hook up my old 17.1 inch HP Pavillion laptop screen to my Pi or what ever else I wanted to plug into it. e-qstore on eBay  I sent them a message with the model of my screen and they did some prep to verify their kit would work before even sending it out.  Did the recommended tests to verify ground was good plugged it in ( I also purchased the power supply for the driver board from them) and it worked great.  Still need to build a custom enclosure for it.  I have a picture of it on my blog.  HP LCD screen comes back to life.

    Just a different option image

Thank you Travis Vaughn. I was hoping to keep this at a no budget project but this seem to be the best way. Thank you.

I was kinda in the same boat but after thinking about it I realized that the driver for the LVDS was part of the laptop mainboard and integrated with it.  I just happen to come across the kit on e-bay when I was looking to see what kinds of screens I could use with the Pi.  So far that option was the cheapest I found.  I may do it again when the other laptop finally gives up the ghost image.
