Beginner Help

I have found the Raspberry Pi and am very intrigued to start my first project with my kids introducing them to coding. They have used the lego mindstorms for the First Lego League, this seems like a great way to get their feet wet before going onto the First Robotics Challenge and First Tech Challenge next school year.

I have just about no programming experience but am very electronics savvy, we will be learning programming/ coding together with this project. What is a cost effective "starter kit" to get us up and running on our first projects together?

I have seen tons of them on various sites but would like to hear from people in the know with some experience and suggestions as to what would give us the most rewarding and enjoyment with the least amount of money, time, frustration invested.

Thanks in advance I am really excited to get going on our first projects.

    Hi Josh,

If you want to get started using not the Rpi but the Mindstorms set, you could also take a look at RobotC. This talk is entertaining / informative anyway: http://bofh.nikhef.nl/events/OHM/video/d2-t5-03-20130801-1400-hacking_the_brick-xander_soldaat.m4v

I guess that the guy talking, Xander Soldaat, would also be able to help you if you have a clearer question. I think that from your question I'm missing what you are looking for: a robotics starter kit, Python / RPi programming lessons, ...? I think the RPi is not a the most straightforward learning tool if you want to compete in the FIRST Robotics Challenge, as they use other hardware, and other programming languages.

If you want to continue with the Raspberry Pi, it would be wise to learn some Python first. To get going on that matter, I can wholeheartedly recommend codeacademy.com as free and interactive courseware.

    Hello Josh,

Welcome to the element14 Community, we hope you are enjoying it so far. I will move this over to the Raspberry Pi area as it is a better fit.

    Thank you,

    Jamie
