Problem with sd card?

Hi, we recently bought a Raspberry Pi Model B with 8GB SD Card from your website but does not seem to work: once powered up we have the red led working, the green one turns on for a fraction of a second then off. We connected it to a HDMI to VGA adapter then sent it to a computer monitor which remains blank. We connected it to a analog TV instead and we have no signal. We looked at the SD card and it has lots of content. We saw your public service announcement stating that if the black RAM chip is "samsung" then the software might not be compatible with the hardware. We have a samsung chip. Our order number is 549490. What would you recommend we do next? Thanks. Leo and his dad

The above was a post in January.  I cannot find any replies but it reflects my issue - the act light flashes green for a fraction of a second when switching on and then goes red.  No display on a computer monitor/laptop etc.  When looking on explorer on my laptop it indicates 67 mb free of 1.17 GB, so I am not sure where the remaining GBs are?  I am very new to all of this but ay help would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Paul

    Hi Paul,

Plugging into an analog (composite) connection requires a key to be pressed the first time the RPI is set up, it is mentioned here. There is also a quick start guide but I could not find it there since the raspberrypi.org revamp.

But basically the general procedure is:

    1. get a 8GB card

    2. Download NOOBS image from raspberrypi.org

    3. Follow the quick start guide (including how to copy the image to the SD card - there is a procedure that must be followed).

    4. At the appropriate stage, press a key on the keyboard if you are not using HDMI

    Hi Shabaz

    Thanks for posting.

I should have mentioned it is pre-loaded with the software - it is the element 14 pre-loaded 8GB sd card.  When I connect just nothing on the monitor/laptop screen.  Any ideas?

    Thanks again.

    Hi Paul,

I'm not sure, but there are a few variables worth checking.

Ppersonally I wouldn't trust a HDMI to VGA adapter unless it is one that you've used on an RPI before, or if it was recommended to work in such a scenario. So, better to just try HDMI direct if you can, or try composite but with the key-press mentioned earlier, but with an updated image.

Many boards ship with old images, so it can be worthwhile downloading the latest. (And follow the special procedure to transfer the image to the SD card).

That is odd. Normally right-click -> Properties should show 8GB. If you have another SD card I would try it.

Also, unless the power supply came as part of a bundle, you might want to try a different one. Usually one intended for a smartphone should work (they can supply slightly higher current than the older mobile phone chargers).
