piface digital scratch handler missing short cut?

Hi

I'm a newbie with the piface and have followed the setup instructions

PiFace – Install PiFace Digital Software – Installing PiFace Digital modules

 

The Piface digital emulator installs fine and talks to the piface quite happily. However even though the scratch handler installs ( I can find it under dpkg --list as python3-piface 2.0.5-1) there is no shortcut on the desktop to start the scratch handler as asked for in

PiFace – Scratch with PiFace Digital – Getting Started with Scratch and PiFace Digital

 

I have followed the Mesh enabling instructions

PiFace – Scratch with PiFace Digital – Setting Up Scratch to use PiFace Digital

and receive an IP address

 

How can I start the scratch handler in order to start using scratch to control the piface?

    Hi folks

    I have managed to find a version of Raspbian with the piface emulator and scratch handler preinstalled. I've been able to use scratch to get the LED working so I presume the other stuff I want to do will be ok. I'm still very puzzled by the failure of the Piface .org instructions so whilst I have a work around I wouldn't mind knowing what was going on. Thoughts?

    Hi Ian,

       I had the same problem and can't say that I know why it occurred. However, my solution was to create a new file in my ~/Desktop directory called "scratch-handler.desktop" and in that file, I created the following lines:

     

    [Desktop Entry]

    Encoding=UTF-8

    Version=1.0

    Type=Application

    Exec=pifacedigital-scratch-handler

    Icon=scratch

    Terminal=false

    Name=Scratch Handler

    Comment= PiFace connection to Scratch Mesh

    Categories=Application;Education;Development;

    MimeType=application/x-pifacedigital-scratch-handler

     

    I don't know if this is the best solution - although somebody who has a copy of the automatically created ".deskop" file could probably tell us - but it works for me and is a lot easier than loading a whole new operating system just to start the scratch handler icon.
