    Hi Mark,

The issue may be the HDMI to VGA cable. There is a verified peripherals guide that can be consulted.

The LED indicators can also provide some help.

There is also a troubleshooting guide.

Ok i have had the same problem so i know how you feel!

right here is how you get it working.

    1) plug your micro sd card into your computer and open it up.

    2) you should see the config.txt click on it and open it up.

    3) uncomment the line hdmi_safe=1    (so basically take away the hash key on each side of  hdmi_safe=1)

    Hope this helps.

Mark: the Troubleshooting Guide is the best starting point, starting with the "Power/Start-Up" section: http://elinux.org/R-Pi_Troubleshooting#Power_.2F_Start-up. In particular look at the LEDs to see how far RasPi got in the boot process.

Many start-up problems are due to iffy power (http://elinux.org/R-Pi_Troubleshooting#Troubleshooting_power_problems) which is often caused by a substandard Micro USB cable (http://elinux.org/On_the_RPi_usb_power_cable, http://www.element14.com/community/community/raspberry-pi/blog/2014/03/07/raspberry-pi-usb-power-cables-crashing-and-other-problems).
