A quick question for a university project. Thanks

Hi all,

I have a quick question for Rasperry Experts. image

We have an university project. Our aim is to build a small device for live streaming. For those who may be interested in, i can say that it is nearly Livestream's small encoder device. You can check it here.

We have coded the software in C for linux and it is pretty working image Now it is time to build the device and we have 4 months remaining to finish the project. We believe that it is quite enough time to finish it.

While we are thinking on how we can build it, our dean suggested us Raspberry and our university will finance the units that we should buy. So it is a great opportunity for us image

Is it possible to succeed at this kind of a project with Rasperry and add-ons? I have checked the previous discussions but found nothing so if it is discussed or any successfull attempts is very important for us. image

Thanks

Best Regards

Paveel

I'm sure it can be done at certain resolutions but I think you will be really pushing the hardware I would consider something more powerful for this application. I have seen plenty of such devices done with faster boards.

I do remember a bunch on youtube StudiotechTV??? who reviewed a unit made form a PI take a look there.

    Hi John,

This is exactly we are trying to build. Teradek Vidiu or Livestream Broadcaster. They are really similar devices. They have small differences like one uses Lithum Baterries the other one can work with 3 AA batteries.

I'm sorry if the following is bad news!

My first thought was to know that Raspberry Pi has HDMI output, but wondered whether the HDMI is also an input. It isn't - and that's a big problem for you. None of the other available pins has enough bandwidth for HDMI video, except perhaps the camera interface. But I quickly found a project where someone tried to develop a similar project before and discovered that un-bypassable internal logic / programming in the Broadcom chip prevent such use of this connector. Read about it for youself at http://www.auvidea.com/index.php/theme-styles/2013-06-22-21-23-34/raspberry-pi-hdmi-in . They seem to have researched it well and concluded that an external HDMI to USB  convertor was the only practicable way ...

Normally they add an HDMI in to a frame store which then does the compression...Getting that all interfaced is quite a big job.

Almost a total redesign in fact.
