what is with the square in the corner of the screen, I noticed this running openelec, but this isn't present on any of my other openelec platforms. Just thought maybe it is a radpberrypi2 specific thing.

Rainbow-y? It's a notification that something g your doing is buttiing up against power requirements. Just means you want to Consider more amps or a powered USB hub.
Definitely a power supply notification like Ross mentioned.
I am using a 2A supply to power the unit and running all other devices off of a powered usb hub. So I can't see how it could be insufficient power. Unless my cable that was powering it was broken, since it doesn't seem to charge my phone either. I guess further investigation is required, thanks for the help.
That is interesting. I've only seen this issue described online in the Raspberry Pi forums on Element 14. I've never had it occur.
It seems that the the micro USB cable between the Raspberry Pi and the power-pack was a dud, so it was a power issue after all. But an interesting side effect is that you can just barely power the Raspberry Pi via the USB-B plugs connected to a powered hub, with nothing connected to the microUSB power port.
I was getting this square this week. I have a RPi 2 and am using a 1A cell phone charger as power. I power an arduino on the 5V rail of the pi, and when I started using a servo powered by the arduino I would get the square. Of course I am pushing it
I've since switched to a battery to power the arduino.
