Raspberry Pi power supply

Former Member
Former Member over 10 years ago

Hello! As I am getting several Raspberry pies to set them in parallel computing, I am looking for an adequate power plug to USB port, a USB switcher and several USB to micro-USB wires to connect the Raspberry Pies to the USB switcher. All this fulfilling the 5V and 750-1500mA of the Raspberry Pi http://www.element14.com/community/community/raspberry-pi/raspberrypi2

I am looking for a solution to buying several of these PSU, RASPBERRY PI, 5V, 2A, MICRO USB INT and having a cumbersome power plug.

    Hello cyrilattie

Welcome to the element14 Community, I will move this over to the Raspberry Pi 2 area as it is a better fit.

    Thank you,

    Jamie

How many Pi are you wanting power for? If there are more than just a few, an old computer ztx power supply can be used. In one of the Ben Heck shows he used it to power. Raspberry Pi • View topic - Using an ATX power supply

If I were going to power several, I would de-solder the micro USB and directly wire them all in parallel.  Then have 1 power source either from an AC adapter that is designed to output lots of amps, such as something from a 12V laptop, or I would use a PSU as Clem suggests.  An RPi2 pulls 4W so if you have 10 of them you need 40W of power, but I would recommend 60-80W to account for USB, network etc plus you don't want to push the PSU too hard.

    Hi Cyril,

As one option -  the 5V supply line is available on the 40-way header (on two of the pins), so your power supply can be directly connected to that if desired. You lose the polyfuse protection but that could be an external (off-board) device if really needed.

Take a look here for an example where the 40-way header was used to power the RPI (at that URL scroll down to the "Additional Ideas" section - in this case it was a 5V supply generated from a DC-DC converter connected to a battery but the concept is the same).
