My Pi only outputs DVI, not HDMI

Former Member
Former Member over 10 years ago

Hi, apologies if this has been answered already but I searched and googled and whilst there were some similar posts around, nothing matched my problem.

I set up my Pi B+ a couple of months ago, initially using a HDMI cable into my TV, then more recently using SSH.  Now I can't get it to output HDMI to the TV anymore.

I've tried various settings in /boot/config.txt but whatever I do the only way I can get it onto a screen is with a passive HDMI to DVI cable.  If I do that then I can select various DVI modes (e.g. 1650x1080 60Hz) but I can't get anything onto a TV by changing the hdmi_group/mode (e.g. 720p) and the TV just says no signal.  I know it's booting up because I can SSH in and if I switch the cable to the HDMI/DVI cable into a monitor then up pops the picture.

I've tried:

hdmi_safe=0 / 1 / unspecified

hdmi_force_hotplug=1

hdmi_drive=1 / 2

config_hdmi_boost=4

2 different TVs

Any help apprecaited

    Since a few months ago it worked, have you tried a different HDMI cable? Cables can go bad...

    Another suggestion: Do a the following since software could be the problem:

    apt-get update

    apt-get upgrade

    Strangely enough I had this same problem last Wednesday. I at first thought it was the HDMI, as realistically no signal means not, "No connection" (check signal wire - bad cable) but means no data/no signal (bad send/no send).

    Thinking I destroyed my pi while transporting it, I tried reposting the pi, checking the disk image, checked solderer connections, power usb in, even swapped the HDMI cable. I didn't have the luxury of testing with a volt meter or changing my display.

    In the end, I found by wiggling the connection for the power input caused the screen to spark a rainbow colour and made the HDMI connection connect.

    My untested theory is that: perhaps that when underpowered, the HDMI cannot fully enable, or otherwise provide enough power to operate a successful connection. Leading to a "No Data/No signal"

    I tested this on another pi, and got the same results.

    So, in that case: what does the red power-led do? Is it on? does it blink?

    HI, thanks for all of these suggestions ...

    - Tried another HDMI cable and 3 other PSUs - no difference

    - I'll try updates later when I can get it onto the internet again.  I did update a month or so ago.

    The LEDs are ...

    - Red, on steady

    - Green blinks a few times over a few seconds, then steady off.

    If I subsequently switch the cables over to a passive HDMI-DVI cable plugged into a monitor, I get my picture fine, so I know it's booting up into either the OS or NOOBS if I hold  Shift.

    I had been trying to boot into Raspbian, now installed RaspBMC instead (by deselecting Raspbian and selecting RaspBMC from NOOBS.  Neither work on the TV, both work on the DVI monitor.  All the playing around with config.txt was done on Raspbian.  I still have the original Raspbian on another card so I can switch back easily.

    Thanks again

    Can you rebuild a fresh version of the os on another card? This sounds like a vital piece of software is corrupted.

    The first was a clone of my existing Raspbian.

    Then I downloaded NOOBS 1.4 but that didn't boot at all.  I'll certainly try, but on my <2Mbps connection it will take a while to download.  Maybe I'll check the checksums on that and try agian

    Thanks for the suggesion

    I was thinking more like this http://www.berryterminal.com/doku.php/berryboot

    Picking the correct version:

    Download link Berryboot for the original Raspberry Pi: berryboot-20140814.zip
    sha1sum: f6a5f4fa59ae62c1e64288ec0cc69908c69f9b81

    Download link Berryboot for the quad-core Raspberry Pi 2: berryboot-20150401-pi2-only.zip
    sha1sum: bc7223fde1c54f7047a74534d11dca6900bec60d

    You would of hoped the PI/TV combo would of auto configured even if there was only a narrow range of workable modes. Your use of the monitor seems to preclude anything fundamentally wrong with the PI+.

    I would probably start by checking the SHA checksum of the binary I downloaded if OK then re write it on to the SDCard and try again.

    I there's a problem with the checksum you will need to re-download the whole lot again unfortunately.

    When you boot initially make sure the monitor/TV is already plugged in etc and let the Automagical-stuff set up the device it works 99.9% of the time so really should be no reason not here.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

    I have now

    1) tried Berryboot - I get nothing on the TV but if I switch the cable to the DVI I get the config screen

    2) tried a new download of OpenELEC - I get nothing on the TV but it's fine on the DVI monitor. Interestingly the config options within OpenElec for screen resolution are only 3 options, rather than the ten or so a friend of mine gets on his, and none of those match the native resolution of the monitor.

    That makes 4 complete OS variants, from 3 sources.  3 PSUs.  2 HDMI cables.  2 TVs.  I'm coming to the conclusion that it's Pi hardware fault of some sort ?
